I have a fat 40GB PS3 with the stock Hard drive.
I have installed Kmeaw's CFW and all is good. now Id like to upgrade the hard drive to a bigger one.
Is there a correct procedure for doing this or can i just slot it in and format it and ill still have a jailbroken PS3?
Ill ftp the contents of my 40GB to my PC before i start so i can copy stuff that i have installed back ie emulators

    Is it that easy?

Personally, I would reinstall 3.55 OFW, upgrade HDD, reinstall 3.55 kmeaw, restore backup. Now, this is just my personal preference. You should be able to just upgrade the HDD and supply 3.55 kmeaw if it asks for the firmware on a thumbdrive, but I prefer to do it the tried and trusted way.

    No need whatsoever!
I did exactly that last weekend I put a Samsung SpinPoint MP4 640GB 7200RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache in last weekend just changed it booted up and it asked to do the format which surprisingly to me only took seconds and then did the restore all worked no problem at all and all this happened under Kweam CFW 3.55 with multiman installed even that came back with the restore lol!

And so pleased I went with a 7200!!!! load of old posts on the net saying no improvement....well the cost today is negligible and it has a 16mb cache not 8mb Doh!! and of course if you have back ups on there then there is no BR limitation on load speeds Mine is also cooler and way quieter although I did have a very early fat 60gb so might not be as big an improvement for all.

Bloody screws were tight on the caddy though I had to butcher them with a pair of cutters to make them to move lol !

I know this has been answered countless times but your post has made me doubt myself, I thought 750 was the biggest that can physically fit in the PS3, is it actually 640? or did you just go for the 640 for other reasons?

No, it has been reported that a 1TB HDD can be fitted if you remove the tray that the PS3 HDD is sat on.

I just done an upgrade to 750g 7200 rpm 2 nights ago. My advice reinstall 3.55 OFW and change drives and put 3.55 OFW back on then go kmeaw . It sounds like a bit of work but it screwed up mine going stright to kmeaw 3.55 and i didnt relise it till after i spent a night copying 255gig onto it . It would boot up but nothing worked and then it forced me to reformat anyways lol .

I originally took out the 40gb drive and installed a 1tb @ 7200 rpms and ended up needing it for a laptop, the next one in was a 640gb @ 5400 rpms and never needed another one, it was good to have when I had OtherOS but at this point it's just reassurance that I can install any game I want without having to worry about having enough space.

To be honest there's absolutely no need for anything over 500gbs no matter what your doing with the system, there's nothing you can do that requires the space allocated but it's purely preference at that point. Save your money and get what you know you'll use.

I'd like a mod's opinion on this but there is a part of your internal HDD that the PS3 uses for it's own operations. If you're overzealous and install too many games (thinking you've got plenty of room now with a 500GB+ drive), and impinge on this 'part' of the HDD, you might find you'll have problems.
