okay, I know all geohot posts usually lead to a flaming row or whatever, and that is not my intention, but anyway, food for thought!!

Every time I see that damn photo I want to give that kid a hard smack around the ears and tell him to get a bloody hair cut.
Poor kid just looks like he's been caught masturbating...
I'm sure he's a nice fella...![]()

I dont give a shit about egohotz, trying to look cool with his "555 autofire-smash-button" that caused sony to deprive us from Other-OS, he got his fame at the cost of our Other-OS. Dont release any information from something that is not yet fully usable/exploitable by anyone else (nor you)... And he still gets a "auto-fame" from something that he doens't ever know (psjailbreak)... >.>
his exploit allows access to a lower level of security than psjb. psjb gives you the same priviledges as a regular game would have, while geohot's exploit totally disabled hypervisor and allowed e.g. full memory dump.
what he did was enough - it worked, and allowed unrestrained ram read/writes. people quickly extended his exploit to get full memory dumps of the ps3. and i suppose they found something there that hinted them towards dongle exploit.
do you know what might be the reaction to psjb? sony disabling service mode completely in future models, and possibly increasing ps3 repair costs in the process. assuming that they cannot patch it.
it's more likely that they will fix up the usb handling code, and change jig behavior.
it's similar to mr brown's exploit on the ps2, when a ps1 disc would trigger an exploit. all it did was run a piece of code that would launch an executable file from memory card. by itself that piece of code was also useless to many people, but it allowed for further progress. and sony could have patched it by dropping ps1 support from ps2 models, you know. fortunately they managed to fix it without dropping the feature.
i really don't believe that somebody might figure out that usb vulnerability without taking advantage of geohot's exploit. it's not that trivial, when you look at the way it works.
I'm just angry because he done this for fame, not by "ideals", and besides this will lead for some unforseen consequences...
Edit: Actually i broke my own law to not let feelings to be posted :P
all exploits lead to unforeseen consequences (other than patches for them).
most hackers do it out of curiosity and seek challenge. and they disclose their methods to the public. and that's what geohot exactly did. he could be even more fair and disclose the details after reporting the issue privately to sony first (which is what hackers who find security holes in various software do - bugs are fixed before made public). would that be even close to ideals for you?
i think he adhered to the hacking ideals just fine. some hackers do it for fame, some do it for reputation, some do it out of curiosity. as long as they share their findings it'm perfectly fine with that.
all that fame was the "hype" made by the media. it's not like he was running around and posting everywhere "hey - *I* hacked the ps3!". and he's not doing that now.
that cannot be said about ps jailbreak team, who made some major progress based upon his findings, and decided not to share them with the others.
I missed at some point that all this was caused by the media hype, plus other complications on RL and that was the result... Ok, forget about this! >.<
Thanks for sharing some info =)
Well im not a 'fan of geohotz' either, but if it was due to his 'exploit' that other developers were able to create such a device like the psjailbreak, then i'd say credit is due where he played a part, even if he didnt directly work on the psjailbreak.
Im guessing this device was named 'in his honor', due to his exploit allowing the development in the first place. So even though he made a 'big mess' up until this hit the news, he is still the one 'responsible' for this to be possible.
The blame/credit goes in both directions, as much as we blamed him for Sony's unthinkable actions, we now should credit him with the 'continued' outcome of his original actions....afterall, he did say "here, now you got something to work with".
Yes he did, but "used" the media to publicize his accomplishments instead of posting all over. He didnt need to go forum to forum, blog to blog as he knew just a single blog posting on a high traffic site would be all that was needed to get a 'fire raging out of control'.
The psjailbreak team on the other hand HAD to hide it to keep Sony out of the 'know' until it was a working product. You can see how fast news spead once they did tell the world.......![]()

It is really funny, the internet. Nothing in this misguided semi-rant describes George's personality or motivations...at all.
See, I've actually worked with george back in the old iPhone days. I work in the real world right next to one of the guys that also worked with us back before "the dev team" (remember anySIM?) and worked with him at google on the streetview project. The last thing these kids have any interest in is money, fame or propriety...and george *reeaaallly* didn't believe in these things, to a fault.
Blaming him for you "losing" OtherOS is like blaming a stick for a forest fire; *Sony* did this to *their customers*...it is patently ridiculous and has been refuted several times over by those in the know including, but not limited to the YDL folks to put the blame on him.
