Games prompting for update

I tried a few games for the first time last night, namely fifa10 and Lego Harry Potter and they both prompted me to install updates....

Now i am connected to the router but not subscribed or signed into PSN..

If you install these game updates they fail, so is it getting the information from the web or the game disc?

any thoughts?

Umm disconnect your ps3 completely off the internet? Its thru web as the disc doesn't have it own wireless internet connection enabled yet unless you paid for the subscription for it.
