ive just ordered a netgear ethernet card so will try that see if it gives me better speed if not i may try bridging see what that does
cat5 will do gigabit no worries, just not over too long a distance (I think 20 metres or something)

What is your network setup, what ftp client are you using, and what settings have you applied on the ftp client?
