I found a old fat 40gb ps3 in the closet, the drive doesn't work, the there are pieces of plastic missing here and there, but it does work. It currently has fw 2.60 on it.
My questions are can I back up some of my games without needing the ps3 drive I have a bluray drive on my pc. Can I use a Motorola cliq to install psgroove or any other backup manager. Or can I just use a normal Ipod.

You're screwed if the drive absolutely does not work. If it will still load a disk, but not read it, you can try your luck at diskless backup loading, which is getting better by the day. As for using the cliq, I'm not sure, you'll want to check out Device compatibility list - PSFreedom Wiki (which it looks like the cliq has been discontinued) for that. If you want to install the hack on an iPod, check in the forums for the thread pertaining to the latest releases for it. You'll also need to update the firmware on your PS3 to something compatible with the jailbreak, just so you're aware. 3.41 is going to have the most compatibility for the games.

Then you should be good. You won't be able to backup games with a blu-ray drive on your computer as it won't properly decrypt the game. You can however download backups, but we're not allowed to talk about that here.
