hi i want to jailbreak my brother fat ps3, already install the ofw 3.55, then when i want to update with 3.55kmeaw, it said the ps3 already has the same version.
i read that i should install the 3.55kmeaw in the service mode, the problem is when i keep pressing the power button it just started normally. i just keep pressing it n no respond, no turn of, no beeps, nothing.
tried with e3 dongle to go to service mode, but when i want to install the 3.55kmeaw, it said a critical error, then i have to force it out from service mode, and i`m back to square one.
i already successfully jailbreak my slim ps3 n my friend slim also, it when smoothly. anyone can`t help me? thanks.

Do not install any firmware upgrades through Service Mode. Only use it to downgrade. It may not cause you problems every time, but you may end up with a brick. Service Mode involves using the e3 dongle.
You want to use recovery mode. You don't need a dongle for it. It allows re installation of the same firmware version, and should allow you to install 3.55 kmeaw without any issues.

4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the PS button

sorry i do mean recovery mode, the problem is when i pressed n hold the power button, it didn`t turn on n then turn off, it just started normally, as if i pressed n release the power button.
the strange thing is that after the ps3 turn on, i can`t turn it off using the power button, no respond. i have to press the ps logo on the controller then i can turn it off.something is very wrong with the power button, i think.

If there is indeed something wrong with the power button, I've entered recovery mode multiple times with the top of the ps3 case off. There is a metal clip/button you will notice when the top case is off. I'm not aware of a way to enter recovery mode without pressing the power button. You could also use service mode, use the modified 3.41 to downgrade, downgrade again to 3.15, than exit service mode and use 3.55 kmeaw, but service mode is going to require you to perform the power + eject jailbreak sequence.
Maybe another member can chime in with some ideas.
Edit, if you've successfully gotten into service mode, instead of trying to downgrade to kmeaw, try the procedure above. Find the modified 3.41 PUP for downgrade from 3.55. Use that to downgrade. Once its finished, get official 3.15 firmware, and downgrade to that. Exit service mode and install KMEAW from XMB. Keep in mind if its one of the first generation ps3 consoles, you can lose blu-ray playback unless you make backups of certain files in dev_flash. If you've already entered service mode once, its to late for that. The first fat ps3's have 256mb of NAND, lose blu-ray playback, but don't require hard drive format. Newer fat ps3s, and slims, have 16mb NOR and will NOT lose blu-ray playback, but will erase the hard drive. Keep that in mind.

i wouldnt suggest downgrading firmware on a console that doesnt need to... such a waste of time and potential loss of bluray movie feature if not done right. i've jailbroken ps3s in the past where the touch button on the case just wasnt sensitive enough, so the case had to be removed and i used the button directly (to get into recovery mode). if you truly intend to follow stock2255's suggestion to downgrade to v3.15 just to install v3.55 kmeaw cfw, then make sure to copy flash0/1/2 BEFORE downgrading. i'm not exactly sure which fatty ps3 model you have, but just the fact that you HAVE a fatty ps3 means i'll suggest copying flash0/1/2. that's only if you want to retain your bluray MOVIE playback, since the downgrading process will kill bluray movie playback on ps3s with 256Mb NANDs.... found on older fatty ps3s. however, if you decide to just enter recovery mode by removing the case and pushing the button directly, that would totally save you the hassel.
