I was originally planning on getting an xbox but it seems like its a pain in the ass to mod it.
I might get a ps3 instead
I am thinking of buying a second hand one which has these details:
"This PS3 is a Charcoal Black 160 GB Slim PlayStation 3. The firmware is 3.55 and has Custom Firmware but can update to latest firmware for online play."
If i bought this, how exactly would i go about playing backups from an external hard drive?
Thanks alot, i have been browsing the forums but all this lingo and vast number of tutorials are very confusing for a newbie like me.

since the PS3 is om CFW 3.55 then just install any backup manager and then you can play games from either External HDD or Internal HDD .

There are more games that work than don't. Most of the newest ones don't work without a TrueBlue dongle. Some don't work at all. Before you buy it, you should know that you won't have access to PSN, but some multiplayer online games support xlink kai which is networking software compatible with cross-platform online games
