External HDD problem –
11-02-2010,01:32 PM
I have an external drive previously formatted in FAT32 which i started putting PS3 games. Recently I went to turn it over to copy PC games and does not recognize the partition and warns you if you want to format ... I reconnect the drive to PS3 and it's ok ... strange, this happened to someone? how can I fix?
help
thx

Try plugging it into a second computer first. It might be something with the first one. If that doesn't help the situation, try getting a copy of Hiren's Boot CD, version 9.0-9.3 (you can find them on his website) and run NDD on the drive. You might have a corrupt MBR. NDD should fix that. If you know much about Linux, there's plenty of tools to check the drive for it too, but I'm not going to get into that here as most people don't know much about Linux.

If you have windows, run chkdsk. I was having the same problem until I ran chkdsk and it fixed it.

Chkdsk might not work if it's not even detecting a partition on the drive. That's why I suggested a program like NDD. It'll work on a drive just connected to the computer. It's worth a try though.

I believe it comes from using patched mode when copying and FTPing. It could also be from using the PL3-NUS payload (correct me if I'm wrong...forgot which one had patch mode permanently on). You may get away with just running the appropriate fixpermissions.pkg file on your external to get it back to a working state again.

You said it was after something locked up and you had to turn off the console, correct? Could be the data didn't get synced back to the drive (just like when you pull a thumb drive out of a windows computer without safely removing it first). My only suggestion to you is, stay away from games that lock up

Same thing (sort of) happened, is, happening to me.
I would plug in the ext HD and Windows wouldnt recognize it at all. So i tried a diff pc and same thing. SO i started plugging it into diff usb ports and finally it is recognized BUT it takes a lil bit before it is actually recognized. BUt if i plug it into a diff usb port it will give me the "Disk needs to be formatted" pop up. ANd even for me to just get that pop up window it takes like 5min.
I have since figuring out about my 1 usb port that recognizes my drive been able to get a few games onto the ext HD and they are working. I really hope that i don't lose my files lol
One thing i did do but i doubt it was the fix, I changed the drive letter of my DVD/CD Drive. Like i said i really doubt thats what allowed my Drive to be detected by the one USB port but that was one of things i did while troubleshooting.
