i was about to post a similar question. i guess the best thing to ask is what do you use for an external as does it work with no problems. that way maybe we can find out whats working and whats not
Nope no specs at all. Any external hdd will work.
When you receive it, make sure to format it into fat32 so the PS3 can read it and your done! (they usually come as NTFS)
so lag is not a problem from slower externals like 1.5 WD mybook?
Yep it really won't be a problem with a well known brand such as WD.
This is because blu ray discs are extremely slow to be read, slower then any hdd
isnt there a max size tho? I thought I saw someone on here say anything over 1tb wont work. Is that true?
I have a 500gb freeagent go and it works fine. I think the larger drives need 3rd party software like swissknife to format the entire drive.
My 1TB external works on ps3 as long as its fat32
i have a 2tb western digital "myBook". seems fine!
OK, my experience with a WD 1TB external Elements Drive and Windows 7.
Got it and shoved everything on there, only to learn it had to be FAT32 to be recognised by the PS3I think all new drives are pre formatted as NTFS.
So recopied everything back to various internal drives and this took a lot of time. Tried formatting with the DOS command from Windows 7 and after 8 hours got to 99% then got an error drive is too big for FAT32.
Then got a free program called Easeus partition, tried this a few times and no go, drive wasn't recognised when rebooting PC. I thought my drive was fried!!!
Then tried the formatter within windows 7, reformatted to NTFS and this worked, drive was OK again. Then tried Easeus Partition again and this formatted to FAT32 within seconds.
So, I reckon there could be manufacturer software on the drive making first time format difficult. I would say format again as NTFS then use Easeus to format to FAT32.
All good now, drive works very well.
