Error on 3.56 OFW using new harddrive / Can't update
Error on 3.56 OFW using new harddrive / Can't update –

Can anybody help me? I bought a PS3 off a friend of a friend and all he said was it doesn't have a harddrive and it asks for you to update when you put your harddrive in.
It says put a firmware file 3.56 or later on a usb stick and press start and select to search for the file.
So I put 3.66 OFW on a usb stick (4gb) in the appropriate folders and I've formatted the harddrive in a PS3 using 3.66 OFW but when I press start and select I get an error code and it says the data is corrupt.
I've also tried 3.56 file but same error.
The person I bought it off no longer has the original HDD becuase he sold it seperatly so I am stuck, does anybody know a way out of this becuase I can't even get to the XMB...
I know that this has been a major problem for people changing their HDD when using 3.56 OFW but all the threads I can find about it are around Janurary time and the only way out of it is to use the original HDD but this info is dating back to Janurary/Feburary, I was wondering if there is a new fix for it.
Any help would be great :-)

You sir, just bought yourself a brick
Only way to fix it is to hardware reflash the firmware. (ex. Infectus)

Wow really that bad? Sony wouldn't do anything if I phoned them? There is nothing wrong with the console either.

Sony should have no problems fixing it for you, provided you pay for it.

It isn't broke in my view, I shouldn't have to pay lol. I just have no way of updating the FW due to the way they set up the console.
Nevermind, thanks for the help.

It is broken. It's probably the 3.56 HDD swap bug that bricks the consoles.
Well you could argue it's Sony's fault but they won't repair it for free, that's for sure.
EDIT : As a last resort, you could try inserting a PS3 game with firmware 3.56 or higher, and try to update via recovery mode (with no USB stick inserted). Doubt it'll work but it's worth a try.

Too bad. Sony isn't going to care if it is your fault, or theirs.
Sorry, but that's the way it is

I had one of these exact same ones, and i sold it to a guy. he knew what it was all about and apparently he got sony to fix it since they DO have something in place for this one bug. just keep calling until you get someone that will do it. if they ask for a receipt say it was a gift as they don't need a receipt then.

You cannot get out of recovery mode with FW3.56 as far as I know. You have to have the original HDD then upgrade the FW to FW 3.56 version 2 to get rid of Sony's bug. Without the original HDD you will have to let Sony take a look.

You are thinking of service mode.
