I would imagine that either of those should work fine - that's usually just what I do

I did rename it, it didn't work, and what do you mean rename the fixed files?

I was wondering if u guys had a fix for Tales of Xillia for 3.55 i tryed one on another site but it didnt go so well and if u guys dont have a eboot for it i could upload one its alot of guys dieing to play this game as well and if u guys dont mind helping us out that would be nice and +reps in return.

I've got about 30 or so and I'll link them all once I've organised them properly and included needed updates and whatnot
but here's a start as I'm just currently testing a few new ones myself

As in, what you did renaming your original but instead rename the fixed files in your hdd gameid folder (either way, shouldnt really matter)
these fixes are update fixes - they dont touch your actual backup in your GAMEZ/S folder so if the gameid does not match then of course it isnt going to work
