Downgrade information

I've read that a 3.66 can be downgraded if it originaly came with a lower firmware. I have a 60gb phat ps3 that came with firmware 1.90, is it true that I can downgrade it to below 3.55 so I can jailbreak?
Is the downgrading part dangerous?
Any information on how to do it?
