Will it cause wear and tear on the laser when playing backups that require users to boot from the disc? Also I bought another copy of cod waw, I already have it on my internal hdd but the game cannot boot disc-less, so will there be any difference if I use the retail disc vs. booting the backup from the hdd?

If it does create wear on the laser, it's extremely minimal. When you boot a backed up game from the disk icon on the XMB, it checks to see if the security sector is available on the disk that is inserted and then reads it. This process takes just a second or so. So, if you consider that wear and tear, then yes. As for you playing the game via disk or backed up copy (CODWAW), it should really matter. The only thing that I can think of, is if your backed up copy is a different region, then your save games might not work between retail and backup.

I backed up the game using the retail copy I have. I was wondering because after hosting a lan party the jailbroken ps3 running cod waw froze. ( it was the host console too lol).
So when booting a game with backup manager that requires a disc be in the system, does the disc inside stop spinning after the game loads up?
