i believe it depends on the size of the nand. correct me if im wrong here, i have the older 256mb and when i upgraded i did not need to reinstall hermes cfw. the 16mb models need fw(cfw) reinstalled tho
It's a slim PS3 and I thought I read somewhere I had to rollback to the original firmware on those.
hmm I guess I need to rollback from what I read on this thread

No.
web, only read a few posts in link u provided but seems like they give u a step by step. see, i kept everything on my pc so i dint car about backing up hdd0. all i did was get game saves and used xmb to download them to a thumbdrive. you have to locate the model number of ur unit and that will tell u alot as well. worse case scenario, just plug in the new drive and see what it says. pretty simple. hope you find ur answer
Yeah it's a new PS3 anyway so there isn't much I care about stored on it atm. I just don't wanna mess it up.
I have a 60GB CECHA 01 Launch model, running Kmeaw 3.55 CFW. I've swapped out the hard drive with new ones several times.
you don't need to go back to OFW. In fact, you're more in danger of bricking your console by continually flashing the firmware between OFW and CFW, than you are plugging a new hard drive in. Adding a new HArd Drive doesn't flash anything. It just formats the drive and installs the OS on it.
