I actually envy those speeds... i get ~850kb/s and its not getting any better lol
Disable your firewall. When Bitdefender's firewall was running I was getting about 2mb/s. Now with it off I get about 50mb/s.
Use Comgenes awsome file manager. This is what i use as I too was getting crappy ftp speeds. Other than that create a bridge with a lan cable and that should increase your speed to around 50mb per second.
so, the PS3 has a build in 1000Mbit ethernet card. I assume your laptop has that also. but...even with a 100 Mbit ethernetcard u should get about 10MB/s.
Notice that Mb and MB is a LOT of difference!
Here is a site to see the differences

Anyway...
A CAT5 cable should be good enough. I myself use that also.
And i am using straight through connection... PS3 ---> PC.
My speeds are 20 MB/s. Notice that this is from PC too INTERNAL HDD.
When i ftp to EXTERNAL HDD of the PS3, the speeds are MUCH slower because it has to go trough the PS3, trought the USB port and thén too the HDD.
Depending on the rpm's of your HDD it will be about 2 MB/s max.
so, can u tell me if u are sending data to internal or external HDD?

well i will be honest i did not think very high FTP speeds were possible ... I had previously been using a 1gbit powerline adapter... which basically networks your house via the wall plugs.
I changed my setup around and now i'm using a very long Cat6 ethernet cable ... connected to a wired 1gbit router which my computer also plugs into. I have never seen these kinda speeds before it is very impressive...
FILE - FILE.BSA 1.9 Gbytes/01:05(s)/31,808.90Kbps
this means the transfer of nearly 2 gigs in 1 minute.. which is incredible really..
the entire transfer:
[i] transferred 135 file(s) - Total: 9.9 G byte(s) in 06:00 (29,609.31 KBps)
i am using FTPrush and the latest FTP 1.1b software on the PS3
