I bought a ps3 off craigslist. The guy said it didnt read disc. So I knew it needed repair. However I assumed it was a disc read error. It was not.

The disc icon wont even appear. I have never heard of this. All options in recovery menu will not resolve this issue. The really SUCKS because this is a backwards compat model. It is up to date with latest 3.41 firmware by the way.

    Suggestions?

What exactly do you mean by "the disc read icon" will not appear? Do you mean the disc icon that pops up in the scroll down menu (if the ps3 is set to not automatically start discs) that you have to click on in order to launch the movie/game?...the icon that is somewhat color coded to the type of disc that is inserted, i.e. goldish for dvds and ps2 games and blue for blurays/ps3 games, etc.

Or do you mean the swirling bubble/clock on the top right of the menu that will spin perpetually and usually quit after a minute or two?

Does the little analog clock in the upper-right corner, spin around like crazy when you insert a disc, or does it just sit there?

Does the disc itself spin? -- Look at the disc (remember the position), insert the disc, wait about 10 seconds, eject the disc.

If the disc is in the actual same position, then you need a brand-new blu-ray laser. (You need a single-eye 400 laser)

If the disc turns very slowly AS it goes into the blu-ray drive, then you have a 410laser dual-eye.

If the disc goes in, makes some clicking sounds, and does spin around, try a normal DVD (non-blu-ray), if that works, you might need to clean the drive, if that fails, you need a new blu-ray laser!

Nah it doesnt move. Its cool, my buddy owns a gaming company that repairs these things. I can still sell it to him for more than what I paid. Win-Win for me. Or better yet, I can get him to repair it. SCORE!

It's fairly common for the lasers to die, although recently I've been seeing more bad drives and fewer bad lasers. The system will run fine for a little while and then the laser will crap out, but it's due to something on the drive drawing too much current, which drops the voltage too low which causes the laser to act really weak.
