The 3.56 update was probably initiated and unpacked ready to go and when it rebooted it was stopped from updating the flash. The restore factory defaults would have removed the firmware update flag allowing to stay at 3.55.

No silly, You're suppose to replace the HDD with a floppy disc that has 3.55 CFW you might need 2 or 3 disc depending on how big the CFW is...

No you cant the firmware is on the hdd but also in the flash on motherboard... if you have a 3.56 console, u just have to cross your fingers and wait till a 3.56 jailbreak is released... but know one knows how far away that is... sorry
