Get Filezilla FTP Client, enter your PS3's IP address, enter port 21, and hit connect. Should work like that.

You can plug the cable directly between the PC and the PS3, but you'll have to set up a static IP on both. The easiest thing is to just connect both to a router and let it assign the IPs.

To my knowledge, Sony has never included the ability to auto-push firmware in its previous firmwares. While they may add it to new versions to combat this jailbreaking movement, I don't believe they can do it with older machines. I've had mine connected to the internet for weeks with no ill effects. If you're still worried, simply unplug your WAN connection/phone line/cable line/however your connection is wired to the outside world while you're doing FTP transfers.

so let me understand right, i should get out the WAN cable, and connect the ps3 lan cable to the wan conection, or to the normal router connection?
    thanks again!

WAN is only for your outbound Internet connection (i.e. modem). Connect the PS3 to a regular port.
