Complete Noob with his first ps3

Alright gentlemen. I just purchased my first ps3 and it was a used phat edition with a 20gb hdd. It has firmware 2.80 on it. I want to jail break the thing but have no idea where to start. I want to be able to play my ps1,2, and 3 backups on it and thats really about all. I was also told something about extra operating systems but im unsure. Im coming from the 360 where all i have to do is flash a drive and im done. Please help

Thank you. I searched for the 2.80 firmware and found nothing.

there isn't a 2.80 cfw. just 3.55 unless you use mfw builder, then it'll go down to 3.15

And I assume that this is the best setup currently? The guy i bought this unit from was saying that 2.8 is special because you can install custom os's and all. I was just happy to find one that wasnt 3.60

You can natively use the OtherOS installer up to 3.15

Not in the same way. After 3.15 you need to hack your system in order for it to run Linux.

I was reading your first post, and you said you would like to bad able to play PS1 Backups. I am not sure if you can play PS1 backups with a modded system. You might be able to play PS2 backups.

There are currently 2 hacks:

1. Jailbreak "Dongle/Device" for 3.41
2. Custom Firmware for 3.41, and 3.55

You should only go up to 3.15 if you want the OtherOS option
