buying a dev tool might be cheaper. but you can get any iphone 2g/3g (Not 3gs) nokia n900, any HTC that can run XDAndroid(vogue, raphael, diamond, topaz, rhodium, blackstone, leo, etc) or android phone(n1, sprint hero, maybe some verizon droids, etc)
also using a phone/psfreedom is alot more involved, you need a special kernel for it to run correctly and know how to put commands in thru terminal. on htc phones it just a matter of replacing zimage files, on android phones you have to install a custom kerner thru recovery console. on iphones you have to install the iphone android port with the psfreedom specific kernel.
I had an iPhone 3G which I used for it. But to me the hassle of waiting for the phone to boot wasn't worth it. On my PS3 slim I had to unplug and plug it in again during the jailbreak process aswell. It was fun and interesting the first 2 times, but after that it got annoying real fast.
It seems you can buy a proper USB solution for $20-30 right now, so in the end I ordered one of ps2chiper's USB boards from AllSystemsGo.
You probably have better luck buying a 1Gen ipod nano for $10-20. Most of the time when you have psfreedom installed on your phone it'll mess up the USB functionality(at least on the droid).
