New to the community...I have searched and searched and still need some guidance on the path to take. Here's the rundown:

    • I have a PS3 Slim newly arrived with 3.40 FW.
    • I purchased the 500GB Western Digital HDD that people recommended for the PS3.
    • I followed step by step instructions on switching the HDD but I am getting the damn dreaded screen regarding "No Applicable data found".

Do I need to download 3.40 FW and try that on a USB?
    Or try 3.41 FW?

I am not sure if I need to update to 3.41 before or after I get the drive installed as I have heard people getting stuck in the endless loop. My goal is to end up on 3.41. Please advise. Thanks!

Try powering off the PS3 and back on. It should immediately come up and say the HDD needs to be formated.

Unfortunately that didn't work. Any other suggestions? If I find a 3.40 version and put it in the right folder on the flash drive, should that work? Or can I go straight to 3.41 while switching the hard drive? Should I put the original harddrive back in and then update to 3.41, then switch to the new drive after the update? Please advise.

Try switching the drive to the original one. See if your menu comes back.
If that works, try the new drive again. Make sure everything is turned off when you do this and unplug the power cord.

Applicable data? Does it say this after saying you need to insert a usb drive with the firmware update? (I'm pretty sure it does)

Make sure you have the right firmware update. (use 3.41, you can use 3.4 but just use 3.41 since jailbreak is heavily supported on this firmware version.)

Have it in the correct folders, should be like v
    root:/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.pup (not case sensitive)

There's a stickied thread with links to the firmware update.

I will try that, but does it matter at all if I upgrade the HDD before or after I upgrade the FW to 3.41? For some reason I recall reading somewhere that this is important, I just cant find the thread anymore. Any ideas? and thanks for your help.

    Doesn't matter no.
Just makes it easier since you have to install the firmware anyway when you upgrade the HDD. (it installs the firmware on the new HDD during the setup)
