Which CFW to use, a noob is confused.
Which CFW to use, a noob is confused. –
Hello ladies and gents,
I am a playstation enthusiast who is new to the hacking/modding scene altogether. Only hack I have ever done is BATHAXX for the wii...don't despair on me, I'm a fast learner.
I recently just bought a 60gb CECHA01 NTSC running OFW 3.55, tracking shows I should be receiving it today so naturally I have been trying to dig up as much information on custom firmwares as possible, though I'll admit I am having difficulty finding just WHAT is unique about each. I really don't want to try them all just to find one I like, mostly because I am afraid of bricking the console as everything I will be doing will be direct from tutorials found online...I a have no real experience here. Maybe in the future I will mess with all of them, but for now I am trying to decide between Kmeaw w/multiman or rebug w/??. I have heard that the upgrade to 3.55 is recommended. So before you answer here is what I am interested in having available for this console (I already have a fully updated OFW slim, this one is specifically for CFW.)
I want to use my Passport Elite 500gb external PC drive (formatted to FAT32) as a regular extension to the 60gb internal, if possible, AND install ps3 backups and emulator roms to it, to run them directly off. (I do not have a BD-R burner)
I DO NOT care about movie playback at all as I can use my slim for this (it has the high-def audio bitstreaming that I'm a sucker for).
Being completely region free. (I actually DO want the Suspiria Blu-ray which is a region B locked), but I would get the official disc of this so again I don't care about movies here really, and this is a lower priority. Just being region free in general.
I will be playing a lot of backups so compatibility is an issue.
Emulators, Emulators, Emulators!!...and Homebrew.
I would like the debug options (I believe you can only have this with REBUG), but mostly jsut to satiate my interest in seeing them on my machine. I struggle to even find a definitive list what they do and which features actually work.
PSN? Not sure, I've heard you can download the demos and unlock the full game from them, and if this is the case I would be interested in that.
FFXIII hacks (just by chance anybody knows about them, really just the infinite Gil trick)...nobody yell at me for playing XIII I've been an FF fanboy all my life!
PS1 and PS2 backups although I've read this is impossible without the swap trick anyway so oh well if I can't have my cake and eat it too.
I realize that I probably can't have everything I want here so I just want the options laid out. You can link me to tutorials if you'd like, but I think I can find them on my own as well.
So basically, given my needs and the console I'm about to inherit, what would you guys do? What DOES each CFW actually provide, and what do they lack? So many options out there, and so little sites where people don't just scream "PIRATE!!!" at you and not help that it's just a bit tough out there for a noob like me. Anyways, thanks a lot in advance!!

Just download Kmeaw's 3.55 cfw, install through recovery mode and you're done. You'll be able to use your PS3 as normal (game/media playback, internet browser etc...), plus you'll be able to backup your games to HDD (internal and external (only FAT)). Read through the forums on how recovery mode works and how to install a cfw - it's all here and I'm not about to write it all out again.
If this is my last day on Earth, I wouldn't want it to be socially awkward...
Thanks for the fast reply! I'm aware of kmeaw's safety, ease of use and popularity, but again I'm just interested in finding out more about rebug. And no, there is no need for anyone to write me "how to's", they are all over this site and everywhere else. Unlike some posters I DO know how to use google. This thread is about learning. I'm interested in the "why's", if you will.

I do have to agree with the reaper though.
Kmeaw is the way to go.
Add in Multiman and you have your cake (though you can't quite get full off of it until backwards compatibility is solved).
Rebug seems to have issues with playing quite a few backups. I will stick with Multiman until something better comes along.
Probably not gonna happen anytime soon.
PSN will be one of the deals that stays spotty, "here one day and gone the next" (until someone figures a way to get back on for a few days).
If you truly have another PS3 with the most current firmware on it then online gaming should not be an issue.
If I actually cared about PSN............I would own another console.
My Wife has been kind of pushing me lately to buy another one so I can play online with my nephews. I may go ahead and do it this weekend.
I was on Kmeaw CFW, but then I tried Rebug and I like it a lot more. Rebug has a lot more helpful options. You should try Rebug 3.55.1 CFW, not 3.55.2 CFW. 3.55.2 has a couple problems.
Thanks, this is the type of info I'm looking for. If rebug has issues with backups then that's a definite strike against it. But again, there are always some who like it alot more. Like I said though, I do not own a BD-R burner, so does multiman allow me to put everything I want on my external HDD and play it direct?
And no, I couldn't care less about playing games online, just the idea of switching PSN demo's to full versions intrigued me but I dunno if it's really possible.
Thats all you need.
Well, rebug is supposed to be getting better, and adding in fixes for those games with issues. If you are just starting out, go to the PS3 Collection link in my sig, and look for the Kmeaw + OFW Pack. Download this, the latest multiMAN, etc, etc. Try it out for awhile and see if you like it.
Then, when you are ready for more, give the latest rebug a shot, you can download that from rebug.me. Or, you can start with Rebug, and go to kmeaw later.
The big problem that is going to keep you from upgrading to other CFWs is naming the .PUP wrong, or not un-installing the rebug spoof.
The main thing about CFW and Backup Managers are it is really up to user preference. Try them all, and then you will know what works best for you. I have been using kmeaw for along long time, and just recently switched over to rebug about a couple of weeks ago.
"The main thing about CFW and Backup Managers are it is really up to user preference"
This is exactly where I'm confused. What exactly is it that I'm preferring?? Is there something one has that the other doesn't, etc., or do they just work a bit differently for everyone? And most importantly, can I use my Passport hdd for everything on both?
I will try both, eventually. But until I learn more I'm just afraid of messing things up.
Awesome links, so the Kmeaw+OFW pack would mean I do NOT need to upgrade to OFW 3.55 before installing Kmeaw, it's just all there in one pack?
The pack comes with OFW and CFW, Install the OFW, and then the CFW.
