I've had my ps3's network disabled since installing cfw. If I enable my network will my box attempt to connect with psn for update(s)? I really want to try tunneling to a common folder to test a more convenient method of large file transfers from my desktop to the external hdd i'm using on my ps3. However, I need the internet to do so. thank you

Look in your system settings and make sure automatic updates are turned off. You should be fine. It will pick up an IP from your router and tell you update is required, but shouldnt download update.

Hey just as a side note, with all this new news from Sony about bans and such, there are rumours floating that being connected like this allows sony to "pull" info from your ps3, such as firmware version, and whether you are on CFW etc., even if not connected to PSN. Not sure how much stock I put into this at this point though.

Use wireshark, or any network analyser software, and capture all traffic from your PS3. Analyse and you'll learn alot!

For me, i discovered that when you open your PS3, nothing is sent to sony at first. It is only when you open your local account that some info is going to sony's server, like firmware version, and some more things.

    Try it, you'll learn something...

The easiest solution is to set a firewall rule in your router to block all WAN access to and from your PS3 by its MAC address. If your router doesn't support firewall rules by MAC (which I'm guessing almost all of them do) you could just give your PS3 a static IP and then add a firewall rule by IP to block all WAN access to and from that specific IP.

Yes, but that defeats the purpose of the OP. He wants his PS3 to have an IP so he can transfer files back and forth. Disabling the internet connection prevents the system from even assigning an IP address. Firewall blocking at the router seems to be the best solution for this.

I am looking for an answer to this question as well. My router does not allow me to block WAN access for specific machines, so that's out. It's a crappy 2wire adsl/router provided by my ISP. I hate it. no settings whatsoever.

What other way can i allow my PS3 to access my network (media servers), without risk it might contact PSN.

The most foolproof way is to disconnect your internet from your router transfer the files you want to transfer then disconnect the PS3 and reconnect your internet. I do not really trust blocking the PS3 mac or ip address because all it would take is a power outage or the router losing power and when it restarts your PS3 connects to PSN possibly resulting in a ban.

I am just waiting and hoping there will be some sort of dual boot cfw, ofw, linux etc in the future so that PSN is possible with ofw and original disks along with cfw that has the ability to block PSN completely.
