    Hi,
I tried to install CFW 3.55 Geohot then Wutarzanga then Kmeaw on my PHAT PS3...I followed tutorials step-by-step and succeded everytime. I installed Gaia, then Multiman, then Rogero, then FixPermission...BUT while launching ANY programm (Gaia, Multiman, Rogero, Demo,.....) there is only a black screen...No return to XMB...No way to obtain anything !!!!!
Could you tell me where i'm wrong? What to check? How to launch any backup manager ?
    Thx a lot.

From what you have said you have followed no tutorial i have read. GEO>Wutangrza>Kmeaw is not the way to upgrade. try this but of course you need to start on OFW 3.55.

sounds like a duff/mis-matched blu ray controller. are you able to play your original games on official firmware? have you ever been able to run any homebrew?

Hi dude, your theory sounds great....Honestly, the BR drive has started to make my day since few weeks...I almost never play with my ps3 and i really enjoyed installing cfw over ofw...So, let's assume the BR device if dead. Is ther any chance to bypass this problem ?
    Help me / It's boring....

Isamudyson, it depends on the severity of it. If the logic board or blu-ray is dead, your going to get a black screen like that no matter what. If the lense is dying or dirty, you'll be able to launch homebrew. If you are getting black screens, it would point to either the logic board or blu-ray itself being bad. Are you able to run a PSN demo or anything? Also, if you put a disc in the drive, do you get the disc spinning icon in the top right of the screen? You may still be in luck, because in most cases, if the logic board or blu-ray is completely dead, you'll be unable to update without getting a RSOD.

Your best bet is to enter recovery mode, update to the official 3.55 firmware, than enter recovey mode again to update to Kmeaw's CFW. You don't need to install any other CFW beforehand.

I woild try homebrew again after a full format & install of kemaw's CFW. Also, if ya let ua know if a PSN demo black screens, and what happens when you insert a disc, we can help ya out more. I have a 2nd ps3 with a bad lense that I use for homrew & backups, so not all is lost yet.

If the logic board or entire drive is dead, your out of luck until a developer can find a way around it. It may just be some kind of security or authentication that causes the black screen, so I'd hold onto the ps3 either way.

sounds like you need the lvl2.pkg, you have to run that before you start the backup manager.

Stock2255 Excuse my french. Sometimes it's quite difficult to translate my thoughts (in french) into english sentences. It's quite difficult also to believe that, due to to the widely spread problem of rotten drives, noone found the cure before. So, if anyone found anything anywhere which coulp help me to bring my phat ps3 from this indian cemetary, i would thank him/her eternally....

[EDIT] Am i lucky for the title...sorry...
