which way to go i have a dongle just came that i cant send back so what is the best thing to do i really don't care to play online. on a cfw can u play backups from an external hard drive? and on jb can you still play the old backups as well as the latest ones?
i really don't know much about a mod for ps3 if it was a wii it would be different so id like some help on which way to go. thanks

The custom firmwares on 3.55 is progressing nicely. You can play backups from an external hard drive just as before and it being on the new firmware allows you to play newer games without having to do anything. On top of that, the syscalls patch is being implemented into backup managers so all you have to do is boot the console and launch the BM ... Without a dongle. If you do not like the new custom firmwares, you can always downgrade back to 3.41 using your dongle.
Being on the jailbreak firmware, you can still play your previous backups and the newer games, if they work after patching.

seriously though - try doing some reading on the forums before creating another post. there are already a ton of answers to your exact question on here. i spent a good 2-3 days reading up before i made my modifications.
