I was wondering if I can just run the 3.56 update via XMB when running 3.55 kmeaw. (what will happen if I do this)
Or do I need to go to OFW 3.55 first with recovery menu?

    Apparently not.

You need to go to OFW 3.55 through recovery mode and then update via xmb.

This is what I have read but I would strongly suggest you wait for more advice or search my previous thread on the same issue.

Wrong, you can update directly to 3.56 from any firmware you want. Due to everybody bricking their consoles recently from waninkoko's first firmware, everybody is paranoid that there will be more bricks.

I posted a thread last night confirming this. A few people posted in my thread that they updated from CFW just fine. When you update it completely overwrites the nand.

I don't value online play, and don't understand why it's that important that you'd get rid of homebrew.

Well, the ps3 doesn't have a lot of games that are fun offline and since there aren't any worthwhile emulators, I can see why someone would want to switch back.

cuz there is a very good chance you'll be locked out of homebrew for a very long time, possibly forever if you update to 3.56
with all this legal action going on with sony 3.55 might be the last cfw.
And what do you mean, no worthwhile emulators?
They work fine and will be improved.
updating to 3.56 is a huge mistake.

I don't consider the snes emulator to be worth while when I can just use snes9x on my pc or even ps2, same with the arcade and commodore emulators. It doesn't look like the dolphin port is coming anytime soon and the psx emulator isn't even working all that great. As far as I know, there's no work being done on a ps2 emulator.

Unless you're really trying to tell me that someone is going to release a cfw for 3.56 just because the dns exploits aren't working anymore. If somebody wants to play online again, there's little reason for them to stay on cfw 3.55, that's all I'm saying.

you're absolutely right, not. quite a few devs have released apps out of nowhere as they were being worked on behind the scene. If you update now there is no turning back

The fact of the matter is...on 3.55 cfw we can store TB's of sony material (the bulk of the current library) and launch them via hdd. (do you not get this part)?
Now, why would anyone in thier right ****ing mind want to give something like that up?
You gonna update cuz there is no dolphin port coming?

I have a working psx and ps2 emulator cuz i bought the phat ps3 with BWC, and the ability to add FCEU to the mix is perfect...i only play smb and g&g anyways.
I will never update this machine!

I think you need to give your head a ****ing shake.

Of course it is purely personal opinion but Emulators (in particular Genesis / Megadrive) are the thing I wanted from my JB PS3. FBANext is brilliant as is mednafen.

PS3 games don't really interest me that much, of course there are some (GT5, Orange Box, Red Faction) but not many and online play.... well I don't even play online with my PC, why would I do it with a console?

I play Kings Bounty on DGen on my PSP more than any other game and most of my PS3 gaming time is evenly split between GT5 and Alexx Kid on Mednafen .

Whilst I "can" play these emus on my PC, there is something to be said for console emulation on a console .
