I may have an opportunity to get a PS3 for cheap soon, but I'm not sure I want it if it can't display properly on my 4:3 CRT monitor (the only HD display I have).

Could one of you check on your PS3 and see if you can set your PS3 to 720p and 4:3? I imagine it would only let you if you choose 480p/i.

Anywho, maybe this would be a good job for the mod community... allowing the user to set custom resolutions and ratios.

I believe HD is only Widescreen due to the pixel ratio of 720 and 1080.

Your monitor will support and display 1280x720, but unfortunately will squash the full image into 4:3 so it will look horrible. You can change your resolution to that while plugged into a PC and see for yourself.

You should be able to adjust the analogue screen size options to get a proper aspect ratio though, at the expense of screen real estate.
