No, you have to downgrade it first.
To downgrade it you need to buy the proper tools then open up your console and attach a chip to your PS3's motherboard and stuff.
Right now 3.72 (the latest firmware) is downgradable, but if new firmwares come out you may not be able to downgrade from them.
So don't update past 3.72 without checking here first if you want to have CFW on your PS3.
Edit: Also worth noting, if the console was bought after the price drop 6 weeks ago, it might not be able to be downgraded to 3.55 and jailbroken.
Since most of the time consoles can only be downgraded to firmwares they were previously on & newer consoles come with later versions preinstalled.
So that means i have to wait for people to jailbreak custom firmware 3.70 then i can do jailbreak to play download games?
Are you refering to the E3 Flasher?
Downloading games (ie, pirating) is not allowed to be discussed here.
Just for your information.
Downgrading your console means (at the moment) that you will have absolutely NO access to PSN for online gaming.
You can play all the campaigns and offline style of play that you want, but online is off limits.
Things may change in the near future, but at the moment you should consider the possibility of 3.72 CFW not a happening thing (which possibly could allow online gaming).
It really comes down to what you actually want out of your system and what you want to use it for..........homebrew and being able to play backups of the games you legitimately own, or online play with the most current titles available.
I think a couple of the more current games may be able to be played on CFW (but don't quote me on that) while the vast majority remain unplayable.
The E3 deal might possibly allow you to dual boot between the current OFW and CFW which would give the best of both worlds (mine is already pre-ordered).
It still would not allow you to play your backups online though.
Again, it really comes down to what is important to you.
mrgreaper is right, unfortunately your in for a LONG wait. weve been waiting essentially since feb if im not mistaken. ur late to the party but the kegs not completely dry lol, maybe u can dowgrade to 3.55... thatd open up alot of games for ya and dual boot with the e3 would allow you to switch back and forth(of course thats time consuming and you have to switch hdds).
so can i downgrade in fw3.72 without going through installing a chip etc?
No.
