For example - I turn back on my connection settings, than boot my game up from XMB and then it prompts me that a update is available is that safe?

P.S- Not signing in PSN at all, just turning on my internet connection setting and booting the game up.

When you attempt to update it it will ask you to sign in to PSN. Then it will ask you to update when you attempt to sign into PSN. So best bet is to not do the update unless if you can get the files from the update and overwrite them yourself through FTP.

Yes you can update your games without any problem.

Use this program to download the updates as PKG files.
    http://psx-scene.com/forums/f187/ps3...-update-79117/ (PS3 Game Updater 1.3 - Major update)

After that put your update on the root of a USB stick and install it over "Install Packages"
    Tutorial for multiMAN: (All Versions)
    1. Start multiMAN (Dont need LV2 anymore)
    2. Choose your desired game on multiMAN.
    3. Mount the game with a click on X.
    4. Say NO to a start without going to XMB.
    5. Now you are on XMB. Click the disk/game icon and have fun.

It doesn't ask you to sign in to PSN at all when it detects a game update. so yes. completely safe.

Useless wrong post of the day, clap clap.
ps3haze - I love the fact that everyone has these grand ideas with no idea what they're talking about... I'm not saying that I've done anything, but I have a good understanding of the complexities involved.

It is best to download updates from your computer b/c the PS3 is sooo slow at downloading (at least on wireless)….i can use my wireless laptop and download a game update MUCH quicker than the PS3 can….took damn near all night to download 5 PAIN updates off the PS3….
    As of 1/26/2011:

I gotta stop drinking and smoking. Just re-read the question and the post and I deserve to facepalm myself. Sorry for the misinformation. Time to smoke another and drink more.

I update every one of my games through the PS3. Just plug in my ethernet before I start the game and unplug it was soon as the update is done.
