Buying a 3.55 PS3. What do I need?
Buying a 3.55 PS3. What do I need? –

Hi I am buying a FAT 3.55 PS3 soon. It is not backwards compatible though, so I have a few questions.
Can it still play PS2 backups off the hard drive? (I was reading stuff on Multiman but i may have misunderstood)
What dongles do I need to buy if I want to play ps1, ps2, ps3, games off my hard drive. And to play the newest PS3 games?
Is there any current way to play online from 3.55?
A YLOD is when the PS3 gets too hot and burns out its processors correct? So if this happens, can it be fixed? Whats the best way to prevent this?
Thank you for the help.

With custom firmware you can play PS1 games from burnt discs.
For PS1/PS2 games from the hard drive you need a Cobra dongle.
For newer PS3 games you need a True Blue dongle.
You can't use both dongles at the same time. You would need to update your custom firmware between uses.
There is no method of playing over PSN.

Thank you everyone for answering my questions.
I have just a few more.
If I bought the 4USB 80gb from gamestop:
What are the chances it would be on 3.55 or lower?
If not, how difficult is it to downgrade / what would i need?
Thanks

If you bought it from gamestop, chances are it is on the latest firmware. What is it with everyone thinking people want the latest firmware?
Well anyways, if you check it out and it is on above 3.55, then you will want to look into ProgSkeet and E3 Flasher, and figure out which one will work with your console, if not both. After that, you need to find someone to install it for you, unless you are good at soldering, then you can attempt the install yourself. Also, you will need a device to put your PS3 into FSM(factory service mode), which could be a teensy++ usb, a PS3Break, etc, etc. There are a lot of devices out there that can be used to put your system into FSM. There might also be a PSP app that works on 1000 and 2000 models on 5.50 CFW, but I have to look and see if they finally got that working. If they did, and it tests positive, expect to see something on the front page about it soon.

So what firmware version is the PS3 you got from GameStop? Do you know where in the menu to find the current firmware version?

I haven't bought it yet. But I am buying a backwards compatible one. And they don't have any in stock in my store and the closest store is 3 hours away. So I am not sure if I am just going to order it online or drive down there.
Its the 4USB 80GB FAT PS3 though.
Once I get it I'll let you know what version it came with.
And yes I know how to find the current firmware version lol.
I have been in the Wii Scene since it first started and I have been following the PS3 scene for a while now.
