No, you need a working drive with a retail game in order for the backup manager to work properly.

You will be able to jailbreak (assuming your eject buttons works?), but you will not be able to play games with backup manager because it requires you to have a blu-ray disc in the drive (some people report it working with dvd backups).

You could always open up your PS3 and try to fix the drive yourself, as long as you don't break anything else in the process.

yes but i imagine in the future these disc checks will be removed or whatever it needs the disc for basically i want to know if the jailbreak itself will work with a broken drive i cant see why it wouldnt but i know you have to power and eject quickly, so is it just the button that needs to be pressed or does the console need to actually register the eject as having occured correctly cos my consoles button works but it cant eject

thanks adrenaline786 for above post was writing this when you replied, so you reckon i can jailbreak it nice

I found out the hard way that if the machine is 'eating' disks it won't run any of the current common packages (ftp/manager) - you have to put the drive back into working form so the disk registers properly and ejects properly before you'll get anything other than a black screen.
