Bit of trouble updating from 3.41 OFW

I'm trying to get 3.55 OFW on a "new" PS3 I just bought, came with 3.41.
However, I get an error (8002F997) when I attempt to system update through the XMB, and when I try to update via recovery mode, it asks specifically for 3.56 firmware and will claim no applicable updates were found with 3.55 in my UPDATES folder.

I've googled for a *really* long time now and from what I gather, it appears this is a PS3 that was jailbroken and downgraded, and its firmware is actually a modified 3.56 spoofed 3.41. I didn't find any solid solution, especially without a JB device, which I don't have.

Does anyone have any idea how I might be able to get around this, or if I'm even right about this? I can return it, but it'll end up costing me more money, and of course I may run into the same problem dealing with Ebay...

If its "NEW" and came with firmware 3.41 then your SOL... Console that come with OFW higher than 3.55 cant be downgraded... Sorry

The system has been downgraded is why it is asking for the 3.56 update. You need to make sure it can go lower then 3.41 by using the firmware checker. If you can you need to QA flag your system and then downgrade back to 3.40 or less then go to the new CFW of your choice. Check this article out to make a little more sense. This was done back in the day by using a modified 3.41 PUP to think it was 3.56 to allow the install of the firmware. Also I suggest dehashing if you want to use a new firmware or you risk bricking your system.

Well, it's nice to have confirmation. Pardon my ignorance though, is any of that possible without a dongle or JB device? I have absolutely 0 experience here outside of original kmeaw 3.55.

Also, Bluevenom, it's not "new" as in a new SKU (well, it may be, I don't know), I just meant that I recently got it.
