    An old phat ps3 will bring activation with it during a hard drive upgrade.. a new slim will not. It has to do with the amount of internal flash memory. That is why you'll hear some people claiming they had no problem upgrading, and others going nuts...

    i have the slim version, which i'm guessing is why i'm having the issue

    Yes, I'm using a 80GB phat. If that is indeed true, then this problem is solved.
