Your preference obviously...
But I use Kmeaw 3.55 CFW with Multiman 1.16.11 and Iris Manager v1.0
That is a vague question but I prefer using MFW builder v0.2 and make my own CFW and as for managers Hermes/Iris is a sweet new manager that even has support for files larger than 4gb and Mulitman has read only access to NTFS so it is up to you. The other managers have really gone the way side as Gaia doesn't have the new USB mount option for black screen games like Iris and Mulitman. I think Rogero has this as well but don't quote me as I don't use it.
Rogero has it too, but instead of Select + X, it is just R3 once, and it saves forever.
Also, it is really a matter of personal choice. If you want to see what you missed in the past months (or see the newst homebrew), check out the link in my sig.

I have no opinion as far as the firmware selection (i'm still a dongle user) but as far as a backup manager, they can all be installed side by side so you might as well install all the main ones such as multiman, gaia, rogero & iris and see which one(s) you like best. They don't take up much space so no worries there.
Also, multiman, gaia & rogero can be skinned in case you don't like the default look of the backup manager (not sure about iris, havent tried it yet)

Heres the same breakdown I gave someone else this morning...I am on Hermes CFW 3.41 and choose to stay mainly for discless compatibility and dongle support in case anything neat gets added. Just depends on whats most important to you.
Few things to consider:
3.55 - Can update new games (that require 3.50 and 3.55) without a hassle. Discless compatibility sucks, so if your blu ray laser dies so does your gameplay. Sony took away 3rd party controller support. No dongle option.
3.41 - Can play almost ALL games discless, so if blu ray laser dies you can still play games. Can still use a dongle. You will need to find modded eboot files for some of the newer games (not as hard as you'd think. Theyre everywhere). Still have 3rd party controller support.
NOTE for both - With 3.60 games we are all now in the same boat now. Both 3.41 and 3.55 users will have to wait to see what happens with 3.60 games.
Note if you go with Hermes 3.41 CFW, locate a copy of Hmanager which auto-loads the payload for you AND it is also the original manager to integrate the ability to play large files off of an external. Irismanager for 3.55 is simply a port of the original Hmanager. Both do the same just depends on what is more important to you with the CFW's.
