before i mod my ps3

hello all before i mod my ps3 i have a couple of questions.

my ps3 is a fat 40GB model with a bad laser. the discs i insert go in smooth but it doesnt read anything.
now i read 3.55k CFW only supports ps3 with a good drive.
so i guess i should update to 3.41 hermes(or something)
am i correct? any insight would be appreciated.
also do not want to replace the laser at this time(low money)

You can install CFW 3.55 with a bad laser, however, not all games run without discs, so you may ultimately want to look at replacing the laser when you have the money.
