Been away since 2007 –
I have been away from the PS3 scene since 2007 (not that there was much a hacking scene back then) so I am having trouble understanding the stuff going on today. I have read about a USB jailbreak for the PS3 and am considering getting one but I am not sure which would be the best to withstand all the changes going on. Can someone explain how the exploit works in simple terms and the applications? What are the limits to the exploits? What things are programmers here working on?
First of all you should check your firmware version. Your good to go if your firmware is 3.55 or below. there's no need for dongles anymore with FW 3.55. Just use a USB-stick and update to a custom firmware. Many use kmaew 3.55 fw. Check out this thread http://psx-scene.com/forums/f118/cfw...ll-pack-77294/ (CFW kmeaw + OFW 3.55 + GAIA 2.05 ready to install pack)
If you updated your PS3 to the latest update 3.60 then the only thing to do is wait till they bring out a 3.60 CFW. Some exploites have been revealed so it might be soon but it might not be...
If only a usb stick is needed what functions do PS3Key,X3MAX, etc. have?
How exactly does the exploit work? I heard someone found a way to access the protected core, is that true?
Still waiting for a response....
The dongles are only used for Service Mode anymore (downgrading). Otherwise, they're now useless. And, yes, we now have full access to lv1 and lv2 memory. That's where the patch is being applied to allow the jailbreak.
Thanks for responding. So only dongles can put ps3's into service mode regardless of firmware edition? I have 3.60 so would I have to purchase one of these dongles to downgrade then use the CFW to play around with the mods?

why you have 3.60? if you left ps3 scene? 2007?
Probably just wait until someone figures out a patch for it, I have yet to check if the system is on 3.60 but it is likely that it is.
I play online on the ps3 occasionally so I might have updated it to 3.60. I haven't been involved with ps3 modding since 2007 so I didn't know someone circumvented the security measures, had I known I would not have updated.
