Basics questions. –
10-23-2012,08:42 AM
I'm very n00b on this of jailbreaking the PS3, so I have a few questions.
1- I have a CFW 3.55 (I don't know exactly what I have in there xD is there some way to know exactly what I have installed so I know what to read ?).
2- What do I need to play the newest games (or at least the newest allowed now)?
3- What do I need to play onLine (PSN if possible)?
4- How can I update my games without losing the JB?
Thanks and sorry for so basics questions, but there's a lot to learn and just reading isn't exactly working with basics things.

1- There is no good method of finding out what CFW you are on. What does it say when you go to Settings->System Settings->System Information and look at System Software? One sure fire way to know is to go back to OFW 3.55, then install your CFW of choice.
2- Three ways of doing this.
--a. You can look for fixes at PS3scenefiles.com
--b. Go to DEX 4.21 firmware.
--c. If you are feeling brave, install Rogero's 4.21 CFW.
3- If you stay on 3.55 CFW you need a program called FckPSN, along with changing some cert files in your PS3's flash memory, or you can use Rogero's 4.21 CFW.
4- Updating games will not make you lose your jailbreak, the games may not be able to be played after updating though.

What's DEX? Is a CFW? How can I install that?

DEX is the firmware used by game developers as opposed to regular consumer PS3 firmware(CEX). It is made by Sony, so it's a type of official firmware. The main advantage is that it allows you to easily change your firmware around without a hardware flasher. It has a BD-ROM emulator that allows you to play the latest games from an external drive, but only if there is an official patch released for a game.
I would not suggest going to DEX, because of the newly released (just yesterday) Rogero 4.21 custom firmware is probably a better option.
If you still want to install DEX, use this guide: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f290/cex...-deank-104853/ (CEX 2 DEX conversion guide by deank)

And Rogero gives me the same advantages?
"--c. If you are feeling brave, install Rogero's 4.21 CFW."
Is it hard or dangerous to install it?

It's easy to install, but it was only released yesterday. Some people are reporting getting a bricked PS3 after installing it. It's always best to wait a bit when something new is released like this, when all the bugs are worked out and it's been fully tested by many people.
This is kind of big news for the scene. It's been nearly two years since any "current" CFW has been released.

So, despite Rogero's 4.21 was just released yesterday you suggest not going DEX? Rogero's is so better than DEX that I should wait and install it?

With Rogero's 4.21, will I need a spoofer?

I suggest waiting on Rogero's 4.21 until they figure out what is causing the bricks. I wouldn't go to DEX either because Rogero's is probably going to be better (once they get the bricks fixed).

You won't need a spoofer, but I think Rogero's 4.21 comes with one anyway.

I think we've narrowed the bricks down to those consoles that have downgraded that didn't set QA flag/reset syscon when upgrading to Rogero 3.8 (4.21CFW). Also it's almost all slims that have bricked, I haven't seen a report about any fats bricking yet.
