Basic questions re. FTP

I am totally new to the PS3, and just picked up used unit with a faulty Blu Ray drive for dirt cheap. My thought was that I could simply FTP games over to the internal hard drive and avoid the need for the drive (turns out I was a bit wrong). Anyway, I got everything setup and installed the FTP pkg, but when I select it, I just get a black screen. Do I need to have an original in the drive prior to loading the FTP server? Or is it something else perhaps?

you can't run games without a disc
any PS3 game disc works just as long as its in there and spinning
however, a patch for the hack PSJailbreak will allow run without a disc (i think its jailbreak)
this will eventually come to otehr devices

So is the FTP server considered 'a game' then (ie. it needs a disc in the tray)?

The FTP does NOT need a disc in the tray, you're running into some other sort of problems.

Does my 'device' need to be plugged in at all times or just during boot?

I can only speak for the TI-84+ calculator, but you can unplug it once it initially loads into the game XMB (and assuming it says "Working...Done").

When you say "Working...Done" do you mean when you initally install the backup manager pkg? Also, for what it is worth, I am using a wired controller and wired internet connection...

No, everytime I boot up my PS3 and run the exploit from my calculator. You have to hard reset your PS3 (unplug it or turn the switch on the back off, then replug/turn on from back) and then turn on your PS3 and press the eject button QUICKLY (I press several times to make sure).

You have to do this EVERY time you restarted your PS3. The calculator eventually goes from "Working..." to "Done", that's when you know the exploit is activated and you can run unsigned programs.

I am doing all of that. I tried installing a new copy of the FTP server and get the same thing....:mad:

What board are you using? And can you provide a link to the hex file that you used
