Hi guys, I was wondering how many backups my ps3 can handle before the blueray diode dies? I don't want to break my ps3 doing backups... Any help or guess would be appreciated, thanks.

it varies. You never know. I have an original 60 gig and have 58 disc based games. I've ripped them all and it's still going strong. This after 4 or 5 years of heavy use.
Dude you're worrying about nothing. Any optical drive should be able to take a couple of years constant use unless it's inherrantly faulty.

In my experience, laser death seems to be more about luck and age than usage... *maybe* if you really thrash it and run it all day it'll warm up and you'll accelerate the death.
I wouldn't stress about it too much. Loading games from the hard drive in the future will mean less usage of your optical drive long term. Worst case scenario - you can get the laser assembly replaced.
I know I'm at risk of being pedantic but the title of your post is incorrect.
Your PS3 does not 'burn' anything.
When it rips a disk, all it's doing is reading info as it would if it were to load; it's just that the info get's stored on a hdd rather than be used to boot up and/or load a game.
I might be wrong, but the laser works the same ripping as it does playing. It just does it more intensely whilst ripping. That is, while ripping it is 'reading' pretty much constantly until it's done as opposed to booting/running where it will load and then stop while you play what's been loaded before loading the next bit and so forth.
That said, you've got to keep in mind one rip is probably going to be like playing a game non stop for several hours for your PS3 and with it constantly reading, the laser will probably heat up a bit more than usual. All that will inherantly affect the operational life of the laser.
But then again, on the positive side, once you've ripped your games, laser use is negligible so unless you constantly update/rip games, you should see normal and possibly extended use out of your PS3 with ripped games.
