Almost getting on the PSN
Almost getting on the PSN –

Was thinking maybe you guys could help me figure out how to get on the PSN? My girl and I figured out an easy way to get to the PS Store and see What's New, even though we couldn't download anything. This is what we did. We went into Settings-> System Settings -> Restore PS3 System and did a quick format. This allows us to view the PS Store and What's New.
Signing up to the PSN seems to make some changes to the registry. These changes prevent further access to the PS Store and What's New. We have made a backup copy of the registry before and after signing up. Various things change, mainly the npaccount and npguest settings. We used Stoker25's registry editor to view the registry. In the program it has a column that's called checksum. It might not be a checksum though. Anyway, after signing up, those keys "checksum" values change and most of the key values become blank.
We took the fresh registry and modified it with information from the "bad" registry. We copied /setting/user/.../npaccount/accountid, loginid and password. We where able to still view some of the stuff but the Store asked us to sign in and then said we needed to update the firmware to proceed. I believe this is different than if you sign up for the PSN and then try logging into the store. After blanking out accountid and loginid, we where able to go back into the PS Store.
I think maybe our accountid is in fact invalid ? Like I said, we copied it from the registry after we tried signing up for the PSN. I think maybe if we created an account on an up-to-date PS3 and used a packet analyser like wireshark, we might be able to get ourselfs a valid accountid and actually be able to sign into the PSN. I think maybe though, with help from everyone from here, we might find another way in? Just a thought.

Absolutly no idea what the problem could be regarding
that store stuff. I've never been there.
The REALLY UBER COOL part is having your Girl
there getting into the whole process. I feel that
alone trumps the fact of getting it working or not.
May the two of you prosper in the search of "Couples Geekism"
Lets face the facts...... for a large majority of members here......
their MOM is the only female in their life. But then again,
she's picking up the tab for this adventure.

I forgot to mention something important. We have setup our own DNS server pointing *.ps3.update.playstation.net to our local web server which hosts the ps3-updatelist.txt. Without this, you will get a message saying you need to update. Oh, if we add all the networking account information into the fresh registry and we get the error saying we need to update, maybe we should have wireshark running and it'll show us where the ps3's getting the new ps3-updatelist.txt from? I think it's perhaps 24.143.194.57, that dang a192.d.akamai.net site. I just don't know how to setup bind to have a192.d.akamai.net AND the ps3.update.playstation.net point to my web server. I keep getting an out-of-zone error.

Yeah, she's the absolute best. Turned my whole life around in fact.
She likes playing these things more than hacking them but we'll take turns helping each other out.

LOL! No. I think that's Dr. Zhivago. We came up with the name at Pizza Hut after a storm one night. Originally it was just Schivago. A few minutes later it became Spork Schivago. After the Marine Corps, they nick named me Captain Spork Schivago and then after the 3 times at the 2 year college, it ended up being Dr. Captain Spork Schivago. I usually keep it short and just go by Spork or Spork Schivago
