You will need a separate drive in order to play files larger than 4gb as you must use USBExtreme and it has it's own file format. Only way I have been able to play files over 4gb on the PS3. I just format my 32gb flash drive for those games or you can do what they mentioned above and check the PS2 section on how to down size the image. There are rip kits for most large games to remove junk or redundant files. And while you are trying to play it on the PS3 the system is in PS2 mode so your answers fall under the PS2 section.
I have not been able to find a way for the PS3 to share a HDD for PS2 and PS3 games yet. It seems if there are more folders than what the PS2 app needs it just will not detect them but once I have only a DVD and CD folder shows right up every time, add a Games folder dumb app no longer detects PS3 games. So I have two USB HDD's one for PS3, one for PS2 under 4gb as PS2OPL will detect the ISO's and anything larger then that I format my 32gb flash drive to USBExtreme specs and load up the game, works like a treat for FF X and FF XII as I didn't want to use rip kits as there was no junk to remove only downsampling of video and that isn't acceptable because the reason I use my PS3 instead of my chipped PS2 is the upscaling of the video so that would negate my needs. A lot of trouble but it is the only way to achieve what I want till a dev actually cares about working on a PS2 loader for the few PS3 users like ourselves.
