right, its not a whole firmware, but its installed as if one.
and correct again with the 170mb mention.
but yeah, if you dont want to do the CFW there is no need, the jb patch by geohot will work just fine on OFW like i mentioned.
let me know how it goes

your E3? you dont need a dongle to get into recovery mode...
i believe the steps are: remove all USB devices, power down (if on), hold the power button as it turns on then turns off a moment later after beeping. then hold the power button again and it should beep to turn on, then a few seconds later you'll hear two beeps - release the power button - and it should now be in recovery mode. this worked on my slim, idk if your ps3 is obese or not.
i dont know where to get OFW's from, but ill try looking.
i see where you can't get the CFW, its been removed. i just uploaded it - will PM you the link so it doesnt get removed again. (if anyone else needs it, just PM me or reply to this thread)
edit: i think this is the OFW you were looking for http://www.ps3-hacks.com/file/238
apologies if its not allowed to link to other sites, im just trying to help this guy - who reads the EULA anyway..

I installed 3.55 OFW then peek-poke and right after that installed geohot but the same black screens keep appearing and the PS3 just freezes. Did the exact same thing to my other PS3 with a working drive and it worked perfectly.

Thanks for the help ghastly!
i thaught you ment service mode, not recovery mode :lol
and thats interesting carlos.
the way the BD-drive works, is the key is in the bdboard, then ps3 searches the board for the key, it verifies, bam > hb
thats the way it worked with 3.41 jailbreak.
if the bluray board didnt work, then you wouldnt be able to update to the new FW.
something wierd is going on
lol
when this file is done ill reflash it and see what happens...

oh see i didnt know the BD-drive was connected at all. how come broken BDD's seem to be common? (i just switched over to ps3)
@Sticky_Mickey, so did you do my procedure and have success?

Well, i reinstalled 3.55 peekpoke via recovery mode, then installed geo jb.

Ive read its because sonny uses cheap parts.
its the most common break among ps3's and people with dead boards are basicly screwed as there is no way (well that i know of) to remary them yet.
math was talking about a way, but who knows..
