My PS3 slim has a new 750GB in it and is currently on 3.55 OF, so I'm ready to install a custom firmware (kmeaw) for the first time. The process sounds easy and I don't think I'll have any problems. Only thing I'm worried about is my PS3 phoning-home and being detected + banned by Sony.

I have PS3 Media Server on my Mac and use it to stream media to my PS3, so it's always connected to my network. Aside from keeping my PS3 completely offline (not really an option here), what can I do? Is enabling the privacy patch with MFWBuilder 0.2 my only option? And is the patching done *before* I install the kmeaw on my PS3 or afterwards?

Just don't sign in PSN network at all, turn off auto-signing + auto updating and you'll be fine.

If you are connected to the Internet it will phone home to Sony. Yes, Mfw builder is the only way I know of to stop it from contacting Sony If you want to keep it connected to the net. Run it on your Kmeaw PUP file but just use the privacy patches. As long as it completes without errors it should be safe to install. Keep in mind if you block playstation.net you will need to use alternate means for updating games such as one of the many game updater apps.
As far as I know, my ps3 has never had an undetected error.

Thanks funktionz. I'm reading up on how to use this MFWBuilder and most of it doesn't even make any sense to me (the whole git-hacks.com thing, rcomage, Tcl/Tk 8.5, etc).

Is there a beginners tutorial somewhere for using MFWBuilder? Or better yet, a version of kmeaw with the privacy patch already applied? I'm trying to use this Mac version MFWBuilder but I can't figure it out and keep getting errors when I build my CF:

Since you have a home network I assume that you also have some kind of router for the Internet connection, and in that case you can probably do the same as me.

I've simply told my router to block all outgoing WAN packets from the local IP address assigned to the PS3.

Exactly how you do that varies from router to router, but typically modern routers contain a web server so you can use a normal web browser to log in and configure it. That is how I configure my Netgear FVS338 router/firewall using Firefox to access it.

By IP-blocking the PS3 only for WAN traffic this way, it remains completely free to access my local net for access to local media server files.

    Best regards: dlanor

Thanks for the reply dlanor. I'm using a WRT54G router and apparently it is set by default to block outgoing WAN traffic (under the "block anonymous internet requests" checkbox in the firewall settings). I'm still not 100% convinced this stops the PS3 from phoning-home though. Anyone know for sure?

I think that if you set the default gateway in PS3 to 127.0.0.1 it won't connect to the internet at all, while still connecting to your LAN.

Try going to your Access Restrictions tab on your router. Click the Edit List button. Put in the MAC address of your ps3. Save changes. You may have to enter a policy name if you didnt get one by default. Select the Deny radio button. Select the Everyday checkbox. Save settings.
You can select your policy and hit the Summary button to check your settings.
    Hope this helps.

Can i modify Kmeaw with PS3MFW and do Patch LV1 Hypervisor ? Is it safe ?
This would make it compatible with OtherOS++

Use proxy when setting up your ps3 network settings and set it to 127.0.0.1
