How do you do this exactly, step by step?

A crossover cable is not needed unless you have a PC/Laptop which is more than 6-7 years old. The PS3's LAN port is auto sensing..all you need is a normal CAT6 cable and you're good to go.

Just manually assign both of them the same gateway, subnet and DNS. Give them IPs in the range and u can then use FTP.

TIP: Turn on and connect the cable into the PS3 first, then turn your PC/Laptop on. This way the auto negotiation of 1 Gbps link works without hiccups.

EDIT: I missed the comment above mine...well here's how you do it step by step

    1) Go to TCP/IP settings on your PC laptop. Give it these settings (examples)

    IP Address: 192.168.1.2
    Subnest Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DNS: 192.168.1.1

Now go to PS3 network settings. Assign these manually(Wired/Ethernet)

    IP Address: 192.168.1.3
    All other settings same
    Enable UPNP
    MTU on automatic

    That's about it I think.
