Some Help Please? –
05-19-2006,11:45 PM
Alright, I`m new to all this USB Flash Drive using with my PS2. Alright, I just want to know how I can use my Flash Drive or a HDD or External HDD WITHOUT buying any additional software OR a modchip. Someone tell me how to make a memory card exploit...etc. Whatever it takes. Hopefully this is possible. Thanx, IceCold

As far as I know, you need an original PS1 disc and have access to at least ONE of these things:
1) A mod-chip that allows you to boot backups
2) factory pressed swap disc and slide tool (ex: swap magic)
3) factory pressed HD Loader/HD Advance
4) cheat device such as: Codebreaker (NTSC Only), AR MAX w/wout EVO pendrive, N-Port, Xploder v4 Software or Sharkport/X-Port. NOTE: This info was taken from the Exploit Tutorial for the Total N00B! v1.3.
5) someone who already has their ps2 exploited that can exploit your memory card for you
NOTE: If you don't have any of these things, maybe you can just borrow or rent the cheat device just to install the exploit. Of course, there is more to getting the exploit on your memory card, but if you don't have access to one of these methods above, then your pretty much out of luck...
EDIT: I believe GameShark will work too, but only the older versions from what I've been told.

Which would be better to buy. Codebreaker or AR MAX? With either, I can use my 1 Gig flash drive with them right? Also, Can I put emulators on them and roms? I read somewhere you could by making an ELF or something.

Well I was hoping someone would answer your first question about what to buy, but since nobody has yet, I would say Codebreaker... although I have never used AR Max myself. Not sure if it matters what version though.
Well from my experience, you can pretty much use any usb data source, just as long as it's formatted in FAT32 format, which you can easily do from your computer if you have some way to connect it to the computer.
As far as I know, all emulators are already in .ELF format. Any other format would probably mean you need to run it from a CD... although even if it's on a CD, it would still be in .ELF format, but may have other files needed by the ELF. So far all the emulators I've downloaded are in .ELF format (no extra files) and work fine off my Hard Drive or Memory Card. Although, there aren't many emulators out there for the PS2 that I would consider worth using cause the developers either stopped working on the code or never released the source code for other programmers to continue working on it.

Ive been doing alot of reading, I`m going to buy the AR MAX Evo Edition, Considering it comes with a flash drive which ill end up selling to my friend for certain reasons. But the Evo Edition has a unique feature which i can put a HD Loader.ELF file which ive located on to the usb flash drive. Boot off it from AR MAX. Format my hard drive with. And bam. Free HD Loader. Yes, I should pay for it. And most likely will. I do the same with my games. Download, If like them, Buy them. Well, I thank you for all your help, And i will be on here again if i need any help, Which i most likely will. Also, How big of a HD do i really need? I think i have an extra 80 or a 40 laying around which i might use. I might upgrade to a massive like 250-500 gig in the future. I have a website for all of you to use to download ps2 games or even xbox games if you guys would like it. Also with my emulators and roms. If you have any like to get what ive descriped it will be appreciated. Thanx, IceCold

Your welcome. You can start by going over the PS2 Hard Drive Compatibility Chart to help you decide what to get, but personally, I just went out a bought a SeaGate 300 GB (ST3300622A), but haven't tested it yet (not on the compatibility chart). I currently am using an old 20 GB Maxtor, which works fine.
There are a few things you need to know about before getting the bigger drive though (above 120 GB). Your computer BIOS needs to support 48-bit LBA, or if you have Windows XP SP2, it's on by default. I really didn't read over that article in great detail, all I know is my BIOS does support it, I have Windows XP SP2 installed, and my Atapi.sys file is newer then v5.1.2600.1135, so it has to work and it does
. Also, your HD Loader needs to be patched (if not already patched) to support 48-bit LBA, and formatted in 48-bit LBA (through WinHIIP for example).

Yes i know that, I know almost everything about computers. Except complex stuff such as Binary. I have seen the compatibility chart. I might just use my external 160 on this. But idk, Then i would need the usb program...Etc. But thanx for all youve helped me with. I have a WD 80, Which isnt on the chart. And it may not work because i let my friends use it because his 2 sata2`s failed. And let him use mine and he hot swapped it and burnt it up. But i think it was on his motherboard because he needed to buy a new one after that. Lol, The 40 needs a new bios or something, When you format it with an OS it will give you the blue screen of death and keep rebooting. Maybe it will work with the ps2. I`m hoping it does. If not, I will be stuck with a dreadful 5-10 gig. Then i will upgrade eventually. If you could please pm me ps2dragon that would be great. I would like to talk to you. If you have AIM, You can have it. PM me on here, Thanx, IceCold.

I use a hub because I don't want to lose access to the internet just to do things on my ps2.
EDIT: You also don't need that Action Replay Max Evo, if your just using it to boot PS2 backups and homebrew. Although, I still don't know what version of PS2 you have yet, so I would need to know that first before saying for certain that you can just use a PS1 disc to boot the memory card exploit (meaning something like uLaunchELF, which is what I use).
