My problem is that i'm not using a normal HDD, instead i'm using USB. When i try to run myps2 from memrycard OR the usb i keep getting this:
    "failed to load PS2ATAD"
    "loading SMAP module: FAILED"
"loading GUI string table: FAILED" and so on..

If i also include a USB.IRX on the memoy card (in the normal locations) then it also says 'loading USB.IRX' and freezes.

All files from the download are included as they were. I tried this using AR MAX and also using he file manager in launch elf. I even capitalized the folder names.

What am i doing wrong here? I've searched around a bit but didnt find anything, sorry if you've answered this question 5 times already.

    THanks

    "failed to load PS2ATAD"
    "loading SMAP module: FAILED"

    these two errors are normal if you do not have an hdd attached and will not effect anything, it's just the way myps2 informs you that there is not hdd installed (nothing to worry about);

    "loading GUI string table: FAILED"

this error usually means one of two things either myps2 can not locate your xml files in your skins directory or this can mean that an xml file is asking for a media file that does not exist.

this could also be that your config.dat skin entry is directing myps2 to a skin that does not exsist, but this is probably not the case since you are most likely using the default skin and this is the default entry in the config.dat.

If i also include a USB.IRX on the memoy card (in the normal locations) then it also says 'loading USB.IRX' and freezes.
where did you get the usbd.irx file, there are multiple offcial usbd.irx files by sony and there is one packaged with naplink...I use is the one loacted on the "baldurs gate: dark allience I" dvd...Also this could mean that your usb device in this case your usb-hdd is not supported by the driver (irx) not all available usbd.irx files are compatible with myps2...

All files from the download are included as they were. I tried this using AR MAX and also using he file manager in launch elf. I even capitalized the folder names.
do not change the orginal layout or filenames of the myps2 folders and files in the archive, I would recommend uLaunchELF...

What am i doing wrong here? I've searched around a bit but didnt find anything, sorry if you've answered this question 5 times already.
myps2 is tricky to begin with especially for those new to the program, you should completely delete myps2 from both your usb-hdd & memory card then without adding a usbd.irx (to any folder...) re-copy all the files to your memory card and relaunch, after you get myps2 loaded I would then add the usbd.irx and make sure your device is compatible by attempting to access the usb-hdd by entering the mass:

below I'm posting a usbd.irx checker (no, irx included) and a myps2 archive that you should not change or edit just copy directly to your memory card..depending on how you are booting myps2 from the memory card change only the myps2.elf file name to reflect this, for instance booting from dev1 rename to BOOT.ELF and place in the BOOT folder...here is a link that might also help out...to run off the usb drive once you know your usb drive works with myps2, you will need to edit the config.dat to run from the usb drive; I can also post one for you if you want...

Thankyou very much for taking the time to make a detailed reply.

    1) I got my USB.IRX from GT4, i've tested it and it works with everything else, e.g. SMS etc. I've tested it with the program you provided, it says it's version 1.4, i assume it's OK then.

    2) i'm already using ulaunchELF and used exactly that to copy the files (after ARmax method failed).

    3) My usb pen drive (/memorystick) works perfectly for everythng else. I have yet to get my USB HDD to work, i've partitioned it intot 2 partitons, one NTFS one FAT23..ulaunchELF doesn't detect the fat32 partition (its a logical partition). Any ideas?

    4) I transfered the files you attached, as they are, to the memorycard using ulaunchELF, even formatting the card beforehand. AND IT WORKS....

I was thinking dev1 would be nice but i'm pretty sure my chip doesn't support dev1. I'm not sure which chip i have and dont realy want to open up my ps2 for a 3rd time. (any quick tests to see if i have dev1 support? i've tried pressing triangle and R1)

SO now, if you would be so kind, i have the folloing questions:

1)How do i get my USB HDD to work?
2)Eventhough MYPS2 boots from memorycard it doenst from USB memorstick(which works)
    3) any other quick check for dev1?

(sorry if the post is a bit messed up, i've been messing with MYps2 whist writing this)

    Thank alot again.

    np, glad I could help

How do i get my USB HDD to work?
I would create one primary fat32 partition, generally apps that support usb devices for the ps2 recognize fat32 not as many can read ntfs partitions, ule probably had an issue reading logical partition though ule should beable to read fat32; since fat32 is still recognized by NT based operating systems (win2k,xp) there shouldn?t be a problem interchanging between the pc & ps2...

Eventhough MYPS2 boots from memorycard it doenst from USB memorstick(which works)
place the usbd.irx (if the gt4 one has problems {freezing} w/myps2 try another) in the SYS-CONF folder on your memory card (myps2 looks in other places, I like to use the sys-conf folder); you will need to edit the config.dat; I'm posting one you can use - create a folder on your usb stick called MYPS2 (case sensitive, all capitals) and place all the myps2 files/folders in the MYPS2 folder on your usb memory stick only replace the config.dat with the one I'm posting; using uLaunchELF exicute the myps2.elf file from the usb memory stick...

any other quick check for dev1?
when you held r1/triangle on reboot was there a BOOT.ELF (case sensitive) in the BOOT (case senitivtive) folder on your memory card? all the chips (I am aware of) that support dev1 eather use triangle or r1 on this path mc0:BOOT/BOOT.ELF at first just use some other elf like sms, or hdl to test dev1 since they don't have file dependencies...

Yes, i tried the exact method, doesnt seem like i have dev1 support.

I tried your suggestion for booting from MYPS2. It no longer freezes when loading the USB.IRX if i use the one from naplink, but it still fails when loading the GUI...

I've tried changing the "hdd0:MYPS2" to hdd0:/MYPS2 and even mass:/MYPS2 in the config file, no luck

As for the USB HDD, i converted the logical partiton to primary, the PS2 can read it fine now, only problem was that my PC refused to see it existed, only way i could transfer files from it was within Norton Partition Magic...I had to manually assign the partition a letter using NPM, now it works.

Overall we've solved the problem of USB.IRX, my USB HDD and MYPS2 (not working at all), not bad. Only remaining thing is booting it from USB, otherwise 9 thumbs up (yeah i know i only have two but what the heck...)

ok, lets see if we can get this last issue solved...

I'm posting another config.dat to use, (erase any exsisting myps2 files on the usb) again create a folder on the usb stick called MYPS2 then place all the myps2 files/folders in the MYPS2 folder on the usb stick {MASS:/MYPS2/(all the files and folders req. for myps2)} don't edit the config.dat just replace. I tested this setup by launching the myps2.elf from my usb stick using uLaunchELF and it worked.

Tried this myself, no luck. Downloaded the MyPS2 1.2 archive in this thread, expanded, replaced config.dat with the last one you posted, copied onto usb mass creating mass:/MYPS2 with the exact layout of the archive contained within.

Halts with "Loading GUI String Table...FAILED"

I tested this one myself and it works fine, so you created a folder on your usb stick called MYPS2 then you placed all the files/folders in the myps2 archive in the new MYPS2 folder on your usb stick along with the config.dat (dont have a folder within a folder, only place all the files/folder directly in the MYPS2 folder) then you launched the myps2.elf file using uLauncELF!

edit: I just retested it and it worked; I formated my usb stick, in windows I right clicked and created a MYPS2 folder on the usb stick - then I copied all the myps2 files/folders in the newly created MYPS2 folder - added my config.dat - loaded uLaunchELF and it worked with no errors. theres gotta be something you didnt do

I'm getting the exact same result. I'll keep tinkering arond with and and hopefully trial and error will lead me somewhere....I'd recomend we make an image of Flamingo24's workign memorystick but this shouldnt have ot be roocket science. I mean jsut copy the damn files to teh MYPS2 folder, add the Config.dat, now where did the 2 of us mess up then?
