Well like it or not it's what you are stuck with. Either external file, or not access. Take your pick TBH it's not too much hassle to put an small irx file in your bedata system and set ulaunchelf to use it using the config... It doesn't slow anything down at all.
I'm having some problems with ulaunchELF 3.87, pointed all the IRXes to the right place, but when I try to view my USB drive, all I get is a bunch of weird characters on the directory listing. Drive's a 60GB Toshiba, formatted FAT32.
That's why I don't like external IRX drivers and I just LOVED uLE's internal IRX for USB mass devices (that one which used to work with my USB drive)

That isn't neccasary, as i've said. You can find the one from ULE 3.80 (which was the same one from ULE 3.79) and use that, which is the one that used to work with your pen drive, no recompilation neccasary. You don't have to use a external USBD.IRX, just the old usb_mass.irx...
@li_gangyi: What usb_mass are you using?
Like Couldhunter said, it's not necessary. But it should work fine, if you recompile it with the old usb_mass.irx

Cloudhunter : the one from the 3.80 package. Seems like it might not like my external 2.5" HDD...weird...
I'd appreciate it if someone could explain more simply how to fix the usb_mass.irx.
I copied the usb_mass.irx file from the source folder, exploited it onto my MC, but when I look at it in ule v4 (in system startup setup, then trying to change USB_MASS.IRX to something other than default) it's not a file, but a folder - and inside are like blaze.ico, some other file, and uknown.dat. wtf? I tried selecting uknown.dat, but nothing happens. (As in ule v4 still freezes if i select mass).
I'm a noob at this but have been figuring my way out so far, even though it takes a lot of time.
Thanks in advance for the help.
You need to rename usb_mass.irx to USBD.IRX.
I'm not sure but try this...
NO! That is completely wrong...!

They are never interchangeable, with or without renaming.
Both drivers are needed to achieve USB storage functionality.
Therefore both also exist inside uLE in embedded form.
But for compatibility purposes you can also load external forms of each of them.
And it is the "usb_mass.irx" from older versions that needs to be used now, for those who had compatibility before, but lost it in uLE v3.84 (and later versions).
When using such external drivers uLE doesn't care at all which names they have, as long as the proper driver file is selected for the appropriate entry in the "Startup Settings..." submenu. These settings must then be saved to the CNF file (by exiting the main config menu with OK command), and the PS2 must then be restarted. And thereafter the selected driver will be used instead of the embedded one.
