USB Drive Problem
USB Drive Problem –
08-20-2006,08:43 PM
I don't know why, but I can't use my USB drive on LaunchELF anymore. I think I have v3.81, and whenever I go into FileBrowser (how I usually update/add files on HDD), it freezes when I pick USB (the light flashes on my USB Drive, which signifies activity, but nothing happens like it used to after the light stops flashing). It always worked before, but now it never works, no matter what files I have on the USB Drive (I tried with LaunchELF v3.84 elf and a JPEG). It still works with my Codebreaker and Max Drive, so it's not anything wrong with the USB Drive or USB Port on my PS2. I have a PNY Attache 256MB USB Drive that I format to FAT16 every time I plug it into my computer. Is it supposed to be in FAT32 to work? What could be the problem?

You probably need to use the usb_mass.irx module from the uLaunchELF v3.80. It is in the Source\modules directory. The usb_mass driver was updated in v3.81 so that's likely why your device no longer works. However, now ulaunchELF can also use an external usb_mass driver. The option is in the Startup Settings under "USB Mass IRX". The default internal usbd and usb_mass still work fine for both dlanor and I so I doubt we'll be changing it.

What's the difference between usbd.irx and usb_mass.irx?

usbd == low level USB device interface and communication protocol
usb_mass == USB mass storage device interface and mass storage filesystems
With only usbd the interface and protocol is available, but *no* USB devices are supported, as all such require additional drivers specific to the device type.
usb_mass is the driver specific to mass storage device types, but is dependent on usbd for low level communication with such devices.
The problems of magus57 appear to be related to usb_mass, and since the usb_mass driver was upgraded with major changes for v3.84, that is the most likely cause. He should upgrade to the latest version which supports external usb_mass modules (v3.84 did not), and try using it with the usb_mass.irx from v3.80 (still available for download).

Well, I after using a USBD.irx from a boot disc I made earlier, I used it to be able to use my USb Drive. From there, I uploaded everything onto my HDD (including the usb_mass.irx and LaunchELF v3.94), replaced the file location, and everything works fine now. Thanks for the help!

Well... I just had exactly the same problem magus57 had with his USB mass drive. Mine used to work fine with uLE 3.79 (just using the uLE's embedded USB drivers), but I was having trouble with FTP and /hdd/0/
Now that FTP issue is fixed with uLE 3.94, i just can't use my USB drive anymore :-( Drive's led keeps blinking all the time and uLE just seems frozen.
I will try to do the external usb_mass.irx trick and see what happens.
It would be great to have my USB drive natively recognized by uLE again...
It's a Kingston DataTraveler 2.0 1GB

Using the usb_mass.irx from .80 should work on .94... That's what the external usb_mass was designed for

hmm... I still prefer uLE detecting my USB drive without relying upon external irx files...
