I am totally new to this elf business, didnt know the format existed on PS2 till today.

    Basicailly I have a V7 Messiah 2 Pro Mod-Chipped PS2.

    I have a .elf of a Codebreaker 9.2.

How do i get this to run? Do i need to put the ELF on a disc/Mem Card or USB Stick?

When i put it on the above media, does it boot on startup or does it need some kind of program to launch it? If so how do i go about getting one of them to work?

Sorry for being a total n00bie, i've scanned the forums but cant seem to find a specific answer to what i'm looking for!

    Cheers!

I don't think any version of the 'Messiah' chip is capable of booting anything other than CD/DVD discs, so putting it on a USB unit wouldn' allow you to run it. You'll probably need a boot disc of some kind, and to be honest I think you should not bother to make it just launch the CB elf. If you use that approach, then you'll need a separate boot disc for every other elf too, which is very wasteful.

Instead you should make your boot disc launch some generic file manager with flexible launch capability, so you can use it to launch ELFs stored on almost any media. With uLE you can use MC, HDD, USB, or even a networked PC this way.

When i put it on the above media, does it boot on startup or does it need some kind of program to launch it? If so how do i go about getting one of them to work?
You could make it boot that way, but it wouldn't be as useful then.

It's sort of like if you were making a separate boot floppy for each application on your PC, instead of just using Windows to launch the application you need at the moment.

No, I'm not saying that uLE has all the same capabilities as Windows, of course not, but in relation to what the PS2 can do normally, the simile still holds up.

That's not very surprising, as your question wasn't all that specific to begin with...

I think you should look for some simple tutorial (with CD ISO) for how to make a suitable uLE boot disc. There are plenty around and I'm sure one of the other guys here will be happy to pass you a link.

    Best regards: dlanor

tutorial to make yourself a CD here:

    http://sms.psx-scene.com/eng/cdimage.htm
(scroll down to where it says 'creating your own CD')

the instruction include adding sms (afterall, it is the SMS website), but you dont have to add sms to the cd if you don't want to...or you could add any extra elf files to the CD too. also, they have renamed BOOTc.elf to BOOT.ELF in the compilation of uLaunchELF... so no need to rename, just use BOOT.ELF

there's a premade CD but the uLaunchELF version on it is quite old now. i dont think it even has the HDD managing tools in that version. i guess i should update it

Also, you don't really need to rename the ELF files you put on the CD, that's just for simplicity. ulaunchELF seems to handle ELF files with long names just fine.

i dont need any HDD managing tools, i'll have a look at that guide tomorrow and have a play around with the ps2 and hopefully with a bit of luck I can get this codebreaker to work.

wahoo...things we do for cheats eh?

Although looking at some of the .elf programs seems there are some awesome programs around. May have opened new doors

cheats make the games interesting again... especially the ones which let you explore places you were never meant to get to normally...
i love to see whether there's anything behind those scenery buildings in the distance. It's amazing how muich detail you can sometimes find in places you'll never normally ever see.

and of course screaming through the game invincible is also fun, though best left for a second run through or if the game is ridiculously hard or boring.

yeah i fully agree Judd. Its for completing the game a second time through so i can unlock everything instead of just the stuff I unlocked first time through.

Loved the cheats for Goldeneye on n64 that enabled me to play multiplayer dam, full facility and the like. Also some awesome cheats on Zelda.
