A "retail version" of uLaunchElf...

Hi folks,

I was just wondering... What about a "retail version" of uLaunchElf? That would allow people who doesn't have a modded PS2 (just like me) to use this wonderful piece of software so easily as put an official game in the CD/DVD tray...

That would be a dream if someone which has a company for making "retail PS2 CDs" put uLaunchElf on it and ONLY charged for the media, not for the software itself (because it's FREEWARE/HOMEBREW).

What do you guys think? I would just LOVE that! :dance:

uLaunchELF updates so often, I don't think this would be feasible. Besides, think of the money people will wrongfully make.

I actually wondered about what I would say if people started selling pressed discs like HDA hdl_patched. For the time being, LaunchELF has been below the radar, which is a good thing. However, the "LaunchELF is ugly" crowd isn't complaining much these days so one has to wonder if uLaunchELF may become a future target since polo35 made it pretty.;)

and I run uLaunch ELF every time I boot my PS2.

Yeah, me too... The exploit thing.

But just think about the newbies who have problems about creating an exploit. Or even about the most recent "chubby" PS2/PSTwo, which doesn't accept the exploit method.

Well, I think it's just about me, but I REALLY loved to have uLaunchELF on a pressed CD, because I just love it so much and is very useful to me.

It looks like most of people think this is a stupid idea :( , so I think this will never happen :(

It could be possible to have a "retail ule disc" with an updated ule if code is added to ule on the disc to check the mc for BOOT.ELF in a specific path on either card, but boot from disc if the elf is not found on the mc. just a thought.

No! :)

I think this will never happen, because of some very simple facts.

The people who retail PS2 compatible discs without Sony's approval (inevitably the case for homebrew stuff) do this only for the money to be gained. This means that two conditions must be fulfilled.

1: There must be a huge market for the product. Preferably a large proportion of all PS2 users.

2: The software must NOT already be available for free in a form easily used by prospective customers.

uLaunchELF fails both of those 'tests', as compared to HDL, because HDL aims at all game players, whereas only some of them would be interested in a generic file manager like uLaunchELF. But more importantly (from the economic viewpoint), most of the prospective users of uLaunchELF can already use it in the form freely available. Thus very few would be willing to pay for a pressed disc release.

And for that we should probably be thankful, as such a development could make uLaunchELF a prime target for Sony's wrath...
